I am 18 years old and a soprano. I have been studying music for 9 years and seriously studying voice for about 2 years. I plan to go to college and either major in musical theater or minor in voice. Does anyone have any recomendations for music books to add to my library to build my repitoire? I have several, but I’m interested to see what people who have studied voice in college and beyond recomend. I have a range that spans over three octaves, so there is no limit in that aspect.

Hi. I’ve always been mad about music; listening to a variety for hours daily, going to concerts, ect. sadly i have no formal education in music or anything of the sort. I taught myself electric guitar with books and dvds and love it. I’ve also read music theory books for beginners and love playing around with music software on my computer. Still I feel that i know very little about music and have no idea how to create my own. How can I learn to create melodies and match them with harmony and rythm? Any ideas on how to start?

How do you learn music theory?
Filed Under Performing Arts | 4 Comments
What I am looking for is a textbook to learn music theory but doesn’t assume you don’t know how to read music. I can read music but just want more information about chord structures and more advanced items than learning how to read music. Any ideas of a good textbook?

I love to sing and play music. I can’t find anyone to get into a band with. All my friends are either in bands or talentless. So would it be a good idea to record the music and sing live with taped music. Would this be a good idea and is it common? Does it depend on the music?

What are the best colleges for performing music and/or the music business?
Filed Under Performing Arts | 7 Comments
I wanna be a professional musician when i grow up. I want to go to music school. What are the “ivy league” schools of music? in other words, wat are those few schools that are the best for music or the arts?
however, i dont just want to learn how to perform music, i want to learn about the business of it too, like producing, copyrighting, selling cds, running a studio, etc… what are the best schools for that?
and are there music schools that teach both performing arts and the business of music? if so, wat are the best schools for that?

What do you consider the best piece of CLASSICAL music (such as Beethoven, Chopin, etc) that is not extremely hard to play, and fun? Such as one that works with octaves.
I’m genuinely interested in what society considers “a beautiful piece of classical music”.

Can someone give me a source for classical music with notable drum sections?
Filed Under Performing Arts | 7 Comments
I’m teaching a group of children who have discovered the wonder of drums and wanted to provide them with a wealth of music that includes drums from kettles to bass to tympany etc. We’ve already been listening to some world music with different drum expressions but I’d like some classical to add to the mix. Help?
